Budapest – Winter has so far caused 95 cold deaths in Hungary. 21 of them died in the past ten days alone, the Hungarian Social Forum (MSZF) reported on Monday. According to the human rights organization, 60 percent of the fatalities in their unheated homes have frozen to death.
Homeless people suffered cold death outdoors, people died during transport to the hospital or during their stay there. The increasing number of cold fatalities would indicate the government’s lack of political will to solve such a serious problem, which has claimed more than 8,000 victims since the turn of the 1990s, Endre Simo, founder of the forum told APA.
He criticized the shattered social network, the victims of which were old, single people, and the mass-evacuation of creditors who had been approved by the state and which further increased the problem of homelessness. Next Monday (January 27th) at 5:00 p.m., a symbolic grave of the cold dead is to be commemorated in front of the parliament on Kossuth Square. (APA)
